Halcyon devices learn to listen for sign language

Halcyon Newsroom · 1 min read

New accessibility features let Halcyon phones and tablets recognise fingerspelling, caption calls in real time, and navigate entirely by eye.

Sign Assist recognises fingerspelling in American and British Sign Language at launch.

Halcyon has worked with Deaf and disabled communities for over a decade. This year’s features came directly from that collaboration.

Sign Assist

The front camera recognises fingerspelled words and turns them into text in any app — useful for usernames, addresses and the names that autocorrect never knows.

Live Captions for every call

Captions now appear in phone calls, video calls and voice notes, all generated on the device.

Eye Navigation

With a short calibration, people can move through the interface, select items and type using only their eyes — no extra hardware required.

“Every one of these started as a conversation with someone who uses our devices differently than we imagined.” — Sarah Lindqvist, director of Accessibility

These features arrive later this year in free software updates.
