Live editing, without ever showing a blank page

The Forumulate team · 1 min read

Collaborative editing is easy to demo and hard to ship. Between the demo and the default were three bugs, and every one of them showed an author an empty page.

The document is not yours any more

Under collaboration the editor's content is the shared document. It starts empty and fills when the socket syncs — so a slow or unreachable server shows an author their own page, blank. That single fact is why so many products leave it behind a button.

Three fixes

The room arrives with the page. The server sends the saved room state with the HTML, so the editor mounts with the document already in it. Nothing waits on a socket.

Anything that replaces the document writes through the live editor. Seeding an outline, an AI rewrite, rolling back a revision — each of those used to swap the editor's content, which under collaboration changed nothing at all.

Emptiness is only a fact after sync. Seeding an empty shared document from the saved copy before the room answered put the content in twice, and the merge produced two of every paragraph.

Where it landed

Live editing is on for every page, with no button to press. If the collaboration server cannot be reached, the page still opens with its words in it, still saves, and says plainly that you are editing alone.
