Structured output: how do I allow an optional field?

With strict: true the schema validator rejects my schema because nickname is not in required. But it is genuinely optional. How do people model that?

Under strict mode every property must be required, so make it nullable instead:

"nickname": { "type": ["string", "null"] }

and keep it in required. The model sends null when there is nothing to say.

Works. Slightly odd, but works.
