Folders, tags or links? How do you organise a big vault?

Every few months I reorganise my vault and every time I end up somewhere slightly different. Current state: three top folders (Work, Life, Archive), tags for status, links for everything else.

What do you do, and how big is your vault?

41k notes. Two folders: notes and attachments. Everything else is links and a handful of index notes. Folders are a decision I don't want to make every time I write.

9k notes. Folders by type (literature, permanent, project), never by topic.

Tags only. I never remember which folder something is in, but I always remember what it was about.

Whatever you choose, the search is fast enough that it matters less than you think.

This thread is making me feel better about not having a system.
