How to center a div horizontally and vertically?

What is the modern way to centre a box inside its parent both ways?

.parent { display: grid; place-items: center; }

or with flex:

.parent { display: flex; align-items: center; justify-content: center; }

The parent needs a height for vertical centring to be visible.
